ENCEVO

Strategic prioritization and maximised contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals

Encevo is a leading and sustainable energy player in Luxembourg and the Greater Region. Committed to ensure a secure access and competitive supply of energy, Encevo actively helps shaping the transition to a responsible energy sector. It does so by embracing technology, deploying innovative solutions and partnering up with local communities. With over 2,000 employees, Encevo Group has a very broad geographical footprint and serves clients in Luxembourg, Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. It is present all along the energy value chain, from production, storage, supply, transport to trading, distribution and services.

The challenge

As a regional energy leader and key player in the energy transition, Encevo Group recognizes its significant responsibility to participate in the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. Answering to this urgent call for action for years now, the Group is still working on to maximise its contribution to the 17 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).

The strategy

In order to maximise its contribution to the Agenda 2030, Encevo focused on leveraging its core business and looked deeper into its value chain. Far from ‘cherry-picking’, it is essential that companies identify and act on priority SDG targets that intersect with their operations and significant impacts – both direct and indirect. Beyond addressing potential and actual negative impacts to people and the environment, the objective is to turn the SDGs into business opportunities – exploring beneficial products, services and investments.

A workshop has been organized with the CSR committee in line with the UNGC and GRI methodological guidelines (Integrating the SDGs into corporate reporting: a practical guide, 2018). Different steps have been important along the way:

  • Have a common and in-depth definition of the value chain
  • Understand the SDGs and their targets
  • Assess the significant positive and negative impacts linked to each step of the value chain – splitting into working groups to tackle and discuss
  • Link them to the SDGs and their targets
  • Identify improvement perspectives and actions
  • Challenge the workshop results across the company

The outcomes

5 priority SDGs were identified and integrated into the value creation model of the company disclosed in our 2019 annual report. They were linked to Encevo’s material topics whose targets have been defined in the Group’s sustainability management plan. While we have still a long way ahead, we are committed to progress as far and fast as possible.
